How I Learned to Hike 14 Days in Norway
This summer I hiked the SignaTUR MASSIV in Norway. 341km with 10445m of elevation.
I spent 14 days hiking and sleeping in the outdoors. Two weeks, just me and the trails.
I had great weather, but I also faced plenty of challenges along the way. Thunderstorms, mosquitoes, way hotter weather than expected (up north the sun shines almost day round), difficulty getting enough food, and much more.
The trip went amazingly well, and now I’m reflecting on how I built up my skills and confidence to take on such a big project.
Part of preparing for this big trip was learning to lighten up my pack. Hiking every day for such a long time means every gram counts. Looking back this is roughly how I learned to pack for a trip like this:
I went hiking in Denmark with a WAAY too heavy backpack.
I was like WFT am I doing.
I went hiking in Norway with just a tarp as my shelter.
I was like WTF am I doing.
I went hiking 14 days with a light but ‘dialed in’ pack.
I was like YES, this is great.
A bit simplified. But that’s the essence. Just get out there and make mistakes.
I still have lots to learn and I’m looking forward to making more stupid mistakes and learning from them.
