First Bikepacking Trip

Duration: 1 day | Distance: 10 km | Price: Free | Aug 13 2025

Left home Monday late afternoon on my MTB packed with gear for a night in a shelter. Biked ~ 5 km. Stayed overnight. Biked home again early next morning. Arrived home in time for a shower and then I went to work.

This was a very short trip. I stayed at a shelter close to home so I didn’t really bike long. The goal was just to try out bikepacking and answer some questions: can I pack my gear onto my bike? Do I enjoy bikepacking?

The answers are: yes and maybe.

This was a good first trial and now I want to try a longer trip.

Gear

  • I packed my sleeping back at the front of my bike. (following this guide)
  • I packed a 15L dry bag at the back of my bike. (following this guide)
  • The rest of my gear I just had in a daypack on my back.
  • I didn’t pack a tent as I slept in a shelter

Notes

  • The front setup was just fine. My sleeping back was sitting fine on my handlebars and it felt secure. The dry bag at the back of my bike was a bit more sketchy. It worked just fine for the 5 km I rode. But the setup didn’t feel as secure and if I had to ride longer and/or on uneven terrain I don’t know how well it would do.
  • It felt good to go on a small everyday adventure.
